Writing a song is a special kind of short story telling. The lyrics and music fuse the narrative to emotion. Pop, folk, rock, and country songs have a traditional structure of verse, chorus, and sometimes, a bridge. Although the form can feel restrictive, every song is unique, and every song is uniquely yours. The rules can, and sometimes should be broken, but only after you learn the right rules to break.

I am an award winning songwriter with 40 years of experience and hundreds of songs. I've toured solo and with my band and continue to write and record new songs, sometimes weekly, sometimes when the inspiration strikes. Here I break down a song I wrote during my song a week excercise this year in which I wrote one song per week from December 12, 2024 to June 20, 2025. There were 31 songs in all, not counting a half written song about giant eels inspired by my patrons at Patreon.
